Flight Training

NIGHT RATING

This is compulsory for CPL and a useful addition to your PPL.
Hold a valid PPL
Aattend night rating briefings
Attend appropriate DVD screening
At least 10 hours duel instruction, of which 5 hours flown in the day and 5 hours at night.
The above includes circuits at night with not less than 5 take-offs and landings and emergency procedures.
A 150nm triangular dual night navigation exercise, with a radius of at least 50nm from base along any sector of the route.
Pass a theoretical test at the CAA or an Approved CAA Test Centre.
Pass a practical flight test.
Equipment Required
:
a stopwatch, 2 torches, Trevor Tom’s Air Pilots Manual Vol 5 or ASA Pilot’s Manual volume 3.

COMMERCIAL PILOTS LICENCE

Be not less than 18 years of age.
Hold a valid General Certificate of Competency in Radiotelephony.
Have written and passed exams within the period of 18 months in the following subjects:

Aviation Meteorology
Flight Planning and Performance
Radio Aids and Communication
Navigation
Air Law and Operating Procedures
Instruments and Electronics
Human Performance
Aircraft Technical

Hold a valid SA PPL
Have completed no less than 200 hours of flight time (20 hours of flight instruction time may be flown on a CAA approved FSTD) of which:
100 hours must be a PIC, of which:
50 hours of cross country flight as PIC, including two flights of not less than 300nm in which not less than two full stops landings at different points shall be made.
Hold a Night Rating
10 Hours of night flying as PIC, including not less than 10 take-offs and 10 landings by night and a triangle cross country flight by night of not less than 100nm and within a radius of not less than 50nm from base along any sector of the flight.
20 Hours of Instrument Flight Instruction, of which not more than 10 hours may have been acquired on a CAA Approved FSTD for VFR Commercial Licence, or 40 hours Instrument Flight Time of which 20 hours may have been acquired on a CAA Approved FSTD for Commercial Pilots Licence with Instrument Rating.
Have passed a practical flight test in an airplane with variable pitch propellers, adjustable flaps and retractable undercarriage, with a CAA Approved DE within 36 months from the date of notification of having passed all the above written exams.

INSTRUMENT RATING

Hold a valid Pilot’s Licence.
Hold a valid General Certificate of Competency in Radiotelephony
Have completed not less than 100 hours of flight time as PIC, not less than 50 hours of which shall be flown cross country by day or night.
Have completed not less than 40 hours of Instrument time, of which not less than 10 hours
shall have been completed under instruction and not more than 20 hours may be
Completed under instruction on a CAA approved FSTD.
If application is a PPL, he must already hold a valid Night Rating.
Have written and passed exams on the following subjects:

-Aviation Meteorology
-Flight Planning and Performance
-Radio Aids and Communications
-General Navigation and Plotting
-Air law and Operating Procurers
-Instrument and Electronics
-Human Performance
- Pass a practical flight test within 36 months from the date of notification of having
passed the above technical exams.

 


 
PRIVATE PILOTS LICENSE

 Be not less than 17 years of age.
Hold a valid Class I or II Medical Certificate.
Hold a valid English Proficiency Certificate Level 4,5 or 6. 
Hold, at least, a valid Restricted Radiotelephony Operators License. 
Have written and passed all exams at SACAA or Approved Test Centre within 18 months.

After passing all exams a student has 36 months to meet all requirements.
ave completed a minimum of 45 hours of flight time, of which not less than 15 hours shall be solo flight and 25 hours of dual flight. 5 Hours can de done on an FSTD (Flight Simulator).
Pass a practical flight test conducted by a Grade I or II Flight Instructor.

STUDENT PILOT LICENCE

This is compulsory before you are allowed to fly solo, and is a requirement for a PPL.
Be not less than 17 years of age.
Adequate knowledge of radiotelephony procedures to undertake solo flights.
Certificate of competency signed by a Grade l or grade ll Flight Instructor stating that you are familiar with the type of aircraft being used for your training.
Within the 30 days immediately preceding the date of application, have written and passed a Pre-Solo Exam.
Hold a valid Class I or II Aviation Medical Certificate.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICEINCY TEST

Air Safety Pilot Academy cc is certified by the South African Civil Aviation Association Authority to conduct English Proficiency Tests in accordance with the recommended standards as laid out by ICAO with particular reference to DOC 9835.
Please make yourself familiar with this English Language Proficiency Booklet prior to taking your English Proficiency Test. Feel free to ask any questions before the test. A student appeal process is in place should you question the results of your test.

This test shall be recorded and stored in accordance with the ICAO requirements.

Test Information

ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements were developed to address safety concerns raised by accidents and incidents in which communication played a key role.

The Objective of English Proficiency Tests

To Test English Proficiency in accordance with ICAO and SACAA Standards and thereby rate Air Traffic Control Personal and Flight Crews involved in Flight Operations in airspace where the use of English Language is required, in accordance with the ICAO Proficiency Rating Scales, and furthermore to obligate the necessary states, operators, and Individual Aviation Personnel to take necessary steps to ensure that ATC’s and Flight Crews are proficient in conducting and comprehending radiotelephony telecommunications in the English Language.

Test Criteria

The 6 Language Proficiency Skills to be tested are:
a) Pronunciation
b) Structure
c) Vocabulary
d) Fluency
e) Comprehension
f) Interactions

Test Method

a) The test comprises of an interview with and English Expert and an Aviation Expert.
b) It is and oral test and has no written questions.
c) The test is not testing the knowledge of the job or your opinions, but only your understanding and command of the English Language.
d) The examiners shall rate you on the 6 Proficiency skills mentioned above according to the ICAO recommended Rating Scale.
e) The Rating Scale has 6 levels as follows:
6 = Expert
5 = Extended
4 = Operational
3 = Pre-operational
2 = Elementary
1 = Pre-elementary

The lowest score achieved on any of the Proficiency Skills becomes the overall Rating e.g. If you are rated (5) for Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Comprehension, and Interactions, but you are rated (4) for Fluency, your overall rating becomes a (4).
Test Results

Air Traffic Controllers and Flight Crews involved in Flight Operations in airspace where the use of the English Language is required must achieve a rating of 4, 5, or 6.

Candidates achieving a rating of 3 or lower: Shall not be permitted to Operate in International Airspace as from May 2008, and shall have to be re-tested in order to comply. Re-testing can be conducted a maximum of once per week.
Candidates achieving a rating of 4: Shall be permitted to operate in International Airspace but will have to repeat the English Proficiency Test within a three year period.
Candidates achieving a rating of 5: Shall be permitted to operate in International Airspace but will have to repeat the English Proficiency Test within a six year period.
Candidates achieving a rating of 6: Shall be permitted to operate in International Airspace and will not have to repeat the English Proficiency Test.
Certification
a) All Candidates shall receive a Test Results Certificate after the test is complete.
b) This Certificate is to contain the following:
i) Candidate Name
ii) Candidate ID or Passport Number
iii) Pilot’s License Number
iv) Rating
v) Examiners Names and Signatures
vi) Test date
vii) Test Number
viii) ATO Number
c) IN the case of Flight Crew, Candidates are to ensure that the examiner provides you with a completed certificate recording your rating and also signs your Log Book accordingly, using the ATO stamp to ensure Authenticity

Test Times and Fees
1. Booking a test session is essential.
2. Please call 073 346 0490 to book your test session.
3. The Test Duration is between 30 minutes and 1 Hour per Candidate.
Please note that some Tests may take a few minutes less and some
may take a few minutes more.
4. Tests are conducted by appointment only.
5. The Test fee is R700.00 including VAT per Candidate per Test.
Test fees are to be paid in full in order to confirm a Test session.

GRADE III INSTRUCTOR RATING

Be not less than 18 years of age.
Hold a valid Commercial Pilot Licence or Airline Pilot Licence.
Have completed 20 hours of Flight Instructor Patter, conducted by a Grade I or Grade II Flight Instructor of which :
15 Hours must be in an aeroplane.
5 Hours may be in an approved Flight Simulation Training Device (FSTD)
30 Hours Ground Briefing at an Approved ATO.
20 Hours Air Exchange Briefing.

Have completed and passed 3 Theoretical Knowledge Exams.
Have successfully completed the appropriate training course with an Approved Aviation Training Organisation,
Have successfully undergone the Instructor Ground Evaluation Test.
Undergo a skills test with an Approved Designated Flight Examiner within the 24 months of passing the Theoretical Knowledge Examinations and within 30 days of successfully completing the Instructor Ground Evaluation.
